Coil tap vs coil split are a lot of like vibrato vs tremolo.

The terms are often mixed up, confused, and misused. Even from manufacturers. Leo Fender incorrectly labeled his amps "Vibrato" when he really meant tremolo, and guitar and pickup manufacturers often market "coil taps" when they really mean splits.

The reality is that relatively few pickups are actually "tapped". That requires some specialized, delicate winding where you take a milder lower-output signal from further inside the winding. They're usually set up for the way more common "splits" where you'd simply turn off one coil of a humbucker and turn the pickup into a single coil.
